25th Anniversary of SS Norway - Maiden Arrival In New York City - May 16, 1980
A Series of Photographs by Theodore W. Scull and Alan Zamchick
The SS NORWAY arrives in New York Harbor
on her maiden voyage on May 16, 1980.
Below, this series of the SS Norway’s maiden arrival photographs were taken from the World Ship’s Society’ s chartered Brooklyn V, based at Sheepshead Bay, which shadowed the ship from all angles from Lower New York Bay, beneath the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge into the Upper Bay, thence up the North River.
(Photographs by Theodore W. Scull unless otherwise indicated.)
Alan Zamchick took the following three photographs at Pier 88 North River.
SS NORWAY approaches the NYCPST where a large crowd, atop the terminal, waits to greet her.
Moran tugs assist her as the Tall Ship CHRISTIAN RADICH sails by her stern.
SS NORWAY is now at her berth at the NYCPST. She looked magnificent in 1980, literally brand new. Her hull had been fully sanded and she was just "pristine mint".
