~ JOHN J HARVEY NEW YORK HARBOR CRUISE ~

On Saturday, July 2, 2005 some 60 maritime enthusiasts embarked on the historic fireboat John J Harvey for a harbor cruise around the Port of New York. The Steamship Historical Society of America, Inc. - Long Island Chapter sponsored the event and members of that chapter were joined by friends from the World Ship Society - Port of New York Branch. Upon casting off from Pier 63 on the Hudson River the fireboat headed north to the New York City Passenger Ship Terminal where 250,000 gross tons of passenger ships were berthed. On this beautiful sunny summer afternoon we encountered the Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2 as well as Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Triumph. When QM2 reversed out of Berth No. 2 and was in mid-river the John J Harvey saluted the Queen with a wonderful water display. After salutes were exchanged we accompanied QM2 as she sailed slowly down the Hudson. Our historic fireboat, recently out of drydock, picked up speed and met the Queen with a water display, once again, just off the Statue of Liberty. Whistle salutes were exchanged and QM2 sailed out of New York on an Independence Weekend cruise to nowhere. We then headed for a short harbor cruise passed the site of the proposed new cruise terminal along the Brooklyn shore line and around the southern tip of Manhattan. While heading north in the Hudson we sailed by the departing Carnival Triumph and exchanged salutes while providing a water display. All enjoyed a great day on the water and we disembarked, some of us somewhat wet, back at Pier 63. Thank you to Long Island Chapter Chairman Tom Cassidy and the Captain and crew of the John J Harvey for a great time. The following are some images of the day.
